The recycling plant WE.C.D. Kimmeria in Xanthi is a modern facility for recycling materials or objects from excavation, construction, renovations, demolition works from the private or public sector.
Waste Excavation, Construction and Demolition (known as WE.C.D. by their initials) currently represent a large percentage of overall waste produced in our country, but it doesn’t correspond to the proper and adequate technical infrastructure for the proper and friendly to environmental management.
The use of inert waste in a modern recycling facility for inert waste, to produce new, fit for exploitation, secondary materials, is the current trend of Environmental Engineering in the field of Alternative Waste Management.
The necessity of organization and development of organized networks for collection, sorting and recovery of materials from construction, demolition and excavation in accordance with the provisions of Law. 2939/01 and the special terms and conditions contained in the CMD 36259/1757 / E103 / 2010 (Government Gazette 1312V / 24.8.2010) expressed through Annex II (NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PLANNING MANAGEMENT NON HAZARDOUS WASTE) of Article 17 of 50910/2727/2003 CMD (OG 1909 B).
The urgent need for creation of modern recycling facility for inert waste is dictated by the fact that inert waste are potentially useful materials that can save the respective raw materials, which mostly come from quarries, known to cause massive local environmental effects.
Waste excavation, construction and demolition waste is one of the most heavy and bulky waste produced in the European Union. Represent 25% - 30% of all waste generated in the European Union and consisting of materials such as concrete, iron, brick, plaster, wood, glass, metal, plastic and soil materials that can be recycled.
The WE.C.D. arising from activities such as the construction of buildings and civil infrastructure, total or partial demolition of buildings and infrastructure and the construction and maintenance of roads.
In Greece the amount of waste generated by various construction jobs (construction and demolition) estimated 6-7 million tons per year (Ministry of Environment Study 2006), but is steadily decreasing due to the crisis in the construction industry. Since t today there wasn’t an organized network of collection and recovery, management of these materials is currently fragmented, creating major environmental problems due to uncontrolled disposal.
Waste excavation, construction and demolition (WE.C.D.) fall into the "other products" 2939/01 Law (Official Gazette A 179) and according to the same law (Articles 15 and 17) requiring the adoption of measures aimed at reuse and / or use of these materials.
The settings JMD 36259/2010 for alternative management of WE.C.D. apply to both wastes generated by private and public projects and aimed at reducing the final disposal of them by encouraging by priority:
• the reuse, recycling and recovery of the wastes , to reduce the consumption of primary raw materials
• energy recovery as an effective means of using them
• set targets for recycling and other recovery of WE.C.D.
• introducing measures for the cooperation of all those who make management WE.C.D. under the principle of "polluter pays" and participating in responsibility
• establishing systems of public information for the adjustment of attitude and behavior in managing WE.C.D.
By JMD 36259/2010 determined purpose and scope and include definitions for the purposes of the CMD. Describe the alternative program management WE.C.D. and specifically outline directions of alternative management plans, terms and conditions for the management of WE.C.D. and the duties of managers and identifies the conditions under which the Certificate alternative management (PAE). Also included are special provisions for the management of WE.C.D..
Description of facility
The basic unit achieves separation of materials and capacity 20 m3 / h.
The licensed collection vehicles and transport WE.C.D., are moving in the space where the unit weighed initially and at the same time becomes a macroscopic control of transported WE.C.D. 1) The excavation and demolition waste consisting primarily of soil, concrete, bricks etc.

Before feeding the material to be processed in the unit, a mechanical prescreening the repository and fragments exceeding 500 mm, such as concrete columns or columns or marble blocks are removed from the piles to be cut further using hydraulic hammer. Then fed the auto-loaded crusher bucket, which is positioned on crawler excavator, and breakage of the materials takes place. From the crushed product using sorting with hands the irons and heterogeneous materials (glass, aluminum, insulation, etc.) are being removed. The latter are categorized and stored for further handling.
Then at the position of the bucket is placed a bucket - sieve, which is supplied with the most pure crushed product and separates the materials. Depending on the size of the sieve holes arise and depending fractions material (eg classified material 3A 0-32 mm, suitable for road surfacing material in roads and as a coating material of agricultural, forest roads).
The production capacity is estimated at about 20 m3/hr incoming material (160 m3/d).
Raw materials and products
The raw materials of the unit is detailed below:
a) Excavation and demolition waste
b) appropriate excavation sand-gravel rocky formation and excavation.
The products of the plant are:
a) Fraction material 0-40mm (3A) for sale for its use in construction and other fractions of aggregates (sand, gravel, cobble etc..).
b) Recyclable materials for sale after their separation ie steel, plastic, glass, aluminum, etc.
c) Suitable material for topsoil, coating material for dumps, rehabilitation of quarries etc.
